Tiling on Top of Tiled Surface

It is possible to tile on top of a surface that is already tiled. The surface must be clean and stable. Sandpaper the tiled surface to remove the smooth surface in order that the adhesive takes grip.

My preference would be to remove all tiles and prepare the surface to take the new tiles. As always leave the tiles at least 24hrs before you commence the grouting and another 24hrs before sealing the tiles.

Terracotta Tiles

When laying terracotta tiles, mix up the tiles from several boxesbefore laying them. Quarry tiles have natural color variations, anda floor looks better if the shades are haphazardly scattered ratherthan in concerted blocks.

Seal porous terracotta tiles before laying them. This will preventthem becoming stained later on by the grout. Recognized sealer oryour own blend of two parts of boiled linseed oil to one part ofwhite spirit.

After the tiles are laid and grouted, give them as severaladditional coats as they can soak up, allowing each to dry beforeapplying the next one.

Your local tile dealer should be able to tell you about waxes andother measures that will protect the seal and boost the color. Youcan also buy shaped tiles to edge a quarry floor.Quarry tiles are great in the kitchen or anywhere wet.

Remember at all times to follow the Manufacturer'srecommendations!

Tile over Linoleum | Laying Tile Linoleum | Installing Tile Linoleum

Tile over Linoleum Laying :

"Laying Tile over Linoleum Flooring

Several years ago I needed to make some improvements in my Bathroom, including replacing the linoleum flooring with ceramic tile. Originally my wife had suggested the idea of installing ceramic tile in the bathroom, however,

I was concerned on having to install an underlayment (such as 1/4' plywood) as well as the ceramic tile. Trying to cut all the jogs around the cabinet, closet, toilet and tub would have been extremely difficult. In addition, I was concerned about raising the bathroom floor 1/2 inch in height.

After a little investigation, I found to my surprise that laying tile over linoleum is possible. It turns out that installing ceramic tile over Linoleum, as long as you prepare the Linoleum floor first, and as long as the subfloor underneath the linoleum is stable.
Preparing Site for Laying Tile over Linoleum

To prepare laying tile over linoleum you first need to sink 1' to 1.5' screws or ring nails about 6 inches apart into the Linoleum to stabilize the surface for the tile. Nails should be on 6' centers from one another.

Installing Tile over Linoleum
Once you have sunk in the screws / nails into the linoleum you are ready to lay tile over linoleum. To do so, use a standard mastic to secure the ceramic tile to the linoleum. Its that simple and my ceramic tile floor has stood the test of time. To date I have had no problems with loose or cracking tiles or grout."

Bathroom Tiling Tips

Once you have decided that you are going to tile your bathroom, take time and plan how you are going to carry the job out.

Remove all fittings that can be removed wherever you are going to be tiling. For example if you ar going to tile your bathroom floor, you will have to remove the toilet pan, possibly the bath and old floor covering if not suitable for tiling over.

The same if you are tiling walls. Remove towel rails, radiators, toilet pan if neccessary (most will have to be removed), anything fitted to the walls that can be removed.

Once you have removed the toilet pan, clean around the flange and place a plastic bag filled with paper towels over the open sewer pipe to stop any gases.

If you have decided just to install a new bathroom suite. This would be the ideal time to tile or renew your tiles in the bathroom before you fit your new suite. It would be very difficult to remove any tiles after the new suite is installed without risking damaging the new suite.

Always ensure you have everything you need before commencing any project

Tiling Bathroom Floor

If your bathroom floor is worn and uneven it is time to tackle the floor. A Do it yourselfer can do it in a weekend.

Make sure that you have the right tools and all the materials that you will require to complete the job before you start.

If your floor is already tiled and the surface is stable you can tile on top of these tiles. Before doing so use heavy grade sandpaper to scratch and remove the smooth surface so that the adhesive takes a better grip.

If the surface is not stable "You must remove the tiles and prepare the surface so that it is completely flat".
Whatever way you decide to lay your tiles make sure that any cutting of tiles is around the wall edges.

After laying your tiles, leave at least 24hrs before you commence grouting. Grout diagonally so that the joints are filled effortlessly. Wait another 24hrs before you seal the grout or walk on the tiles.

Bathroom Tiles - Tiling - Tile Setting Hints -

Bathroom Tiles - Tiling - Tile Setting Hints -: "look at this as a sort of 'wish list': it's not always possible to abide by all the laws, but if you're able to, it'll make for a bang-up tiling job.

1. Minimize Your Use of Tiles Less Than Half-Size
Cutting is just a fact of life with tiling. But always try to use cut tiles that are between half- and full-size. Anything less than half-size looks too skinny and slivery.

How can you do this? Try to anticipate the amount of space yo
u have left as you near a wall. If you're two or three feet from the wall, you can begin to tweak the joints between the tiles ever so slightly that it will be imperceptible to the eye, but will bring you to a final row of half-size or greater tiles.

2."Bathroom Tiles - Tiling - Tile Setting Hints -: "Employ Symmetry in Your Layouts Perhaps a no-brainer, but what we're talking about are the edge pieces. If you're setting tile around a kitchen sink, for example, make sure that tiles bordering the sink are all of the same size. The last thing you want are full-size tiles on one side and half-size tiles on the other size. Same example applies to a bathroom floor. Here you'll want opposite-end wall tiles to be the same size. If one wall has three-quarters size tiles, the opposite wall should have the same.

3. Minimize Your Tile-Cutting Two reasons for this. First, cut tiles just never look good. The more full tiles you can use, the better. Secondly, tile-cutting is not fun. Even outfitted with a top-of-the-line tile cutting wet saw, you will not enjoy life. But you can get over the work end of it. It simply doesn't look good to have a lot of cut tiles in your layout.

4. Use Full Tiles In Highly Visual Areas When people put up Christmas trees, they often turn the tree so that the bad side faces the wall and the full side faces the room. Same story here. Tuck the cut tiles away in the less-noticable areas: near walls, borders, under the cabinetry overhangs, etc. The center of a bathroom floor or kitchen counter is the worst place for a cut tile."

HOMETIME Ceramic Tile - Floor Underlayment

HOMETIME Ceramic Tile - Floor Underlayment:

"Floor Underlayment

A strong underlayment is the most important part of the tile installation. There are several options for achieving a sturdy floor underlayment.

To tile over an existing floor, it must be flat, solid, and well bonded to the sub-floor. The floor and subfloor should be at least 1-1/8' thick for good support.

If your existing flooring is cushioned vinyl or linoleum, you can either remove it or cover it with a proper underlayment. You can install tile over tile as long as it's level and in good condition. You may have to roughen the surface of tile if it's too glossy.

If you have more than one layer of flooring, or if it's damaged beyond repair, it must be removed and another underlayment installed.

WARNING: Some older resilient flooring may contain asbestos fibers. Do not try to remove or sand this type of flooring without having a trained asbestos inspector determine if asbestos is present. Resilient flooring with asbestos can be covered safely with plywood, or removed by a professional contractor."
